Coming-of-Age!
I chose Coming-of-Age to be my genre because I feel like black girls never really got their relatable Coming-of-Age film like white girls have. We see ourselves as the superhero, the activist, the sidekick, the best friend or the bully in Coming-of-Age films, and I think that that is unfair. I feel like I would be able to discuss that point of view in my research as well, and I'm excited to learn more about the genre. I'm thinking of making it an "art house" style film, like Ladybird or Moonlight, but I don't even know the storyline yet, so I guess that I should worry about that first.
This article by Monica Sinaloa from Imagine This Film Festival covers more on this. The article talks about how POC coming-of-age films struggle more in box office than their white counterparts. It also talks about how young POC can only relate to white characters on a surface level, and films with POC leads need to be more amplified.
