In my previous most, I mentioned a couple of possible genres that my opener could be. By now, I thought I’d have more of an idea of what I wanted to do. However, instead of coming up with a solution, I’ve completely overthought all of my options… I’ll list them below, and I will attach some articles that I’ve read on each genre .

So my first thought was to make a musical number, because in my opinion, there is nothing better than a heavily choreographed opening, like La La Land’s Another Day of Sun. However, I don’t have La La Land’s budget or crew, dancers, technology, or on hand. But still, there’s something magical to me when film combines with music and dance to tell a story. It just makes the narrative even more enjoyable.
This article written by the British Film Institute elaborates more on the magic of musicals. The article discusses the history of the genre, the technical aspects, and analyzes some of the films within this genre. I definitely enjoyed reading it, and it is linked below.

My other genre option is Coming-of-Age.  I mentioned in my previous post that I was thinking about making my opener an adaptation of my favorite book, (underline) Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson, however, I’m not sure because 1- it wouldn’t be a fully original idea, and 2- it’s really early… Like I just decided that I’m making a film, so I don’t think that I should commit to a narrative just yet. However, I do know that I want my film opening to star a black character, because the Coming-of-Age genre is a majority white genre, and black kids deserve to have a story about them (well, us, because I’m black too), too. However, I think that the genre is starting to become more diverse.

This article written by The Ringer is about the direction that the Coming-of-Age genre is going in. The title “The New Generation of Teen Movies Is Nicer (and on Netflix)” pretty much tells what the article is about. The article briefly discusses the history of the genre and draws connection between past Coming-of-Age films and current Coming-of-Age films. It also discusses the finances of Coming-of-Age films, how it’s adapting to the new digital age in film, and how the genre is becoming more diverse and inclusive.

This last article is about the book Monday’s Not Coming. Monday’s Not Coming is about a black girl named Monday who went missing, and no one noticed that she was missing for about a year. It’s not based on a true story, however, it is a sort of commentary piece on how black girls and women are ignored in the court of law. Here is an article on the relevancy of the story:
